Propane and Christmas Tree Safety

Propane and Christmas Tree Safety

The holiday season has arrived and it’s time to decorate the Christmas tree, wrap presents and hang the stockings. We encourage you to read over these fireplace safety tips before decorating your home with Christmas decor.

Fireplace Safety

Fireplace safety is extremely important during the holiday season. House fires that occur from Thanksgiving through early January are almost 70% more deadly than at any other time, according to the U.S. Fire Administration.

Propane & Carbon Monoxide

Clearance Zones

A clearance zone is an area around your fireplace that you should avoid placing flammable or easily damaged materials.

  1. Check your manufacturer’s manual for more information on the clearance zone for your particular unit’s model. A good rule of thumb is 3 ft away.
  2. Avoid putting items that are flammable:
    1. Christmas Trees, Stocking and Decor
    2. Wood and Paper Products
    3. Furniture and Window Treatments

Test Smoke Detectors and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

We recommend installing both smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors on every level of your home.

Schedule a Yearly Service

Schedule a routine service and cleaning on your propane fireplaces and gas logs. One of our certified technicians will clean and inspect your fireplace to identify any safety concerns and to extend the life of your fireplace.

Keep Children and Pets Away

Always supervise your children and pets regardless if the fireplace is on or off to teach them to keep a safe distance away. Once turned off, the fireplace may remain hot for more than an hour afterwards.

Christmas Decor

Christmas Trees, stocking and all the decorations are beautiful, but can also be dangerous if too close to a gas fireplace. More than 1 in every 5 Christmas tree fires were caused by a heat source too close to the tree.

Propane and Christmas Tree Safety

Christmas Decorations

  1. Live and artificial trees are highly flammable.
    1. Some artificial trees may be marked as “flame retardant”, however they are still highly flammable.
    2. Live trees that are kept watered are safer for the home than artificial trees.
  2. Do not place a Christmas tree, garland or any other greenery within 3 ft of any heat source (fireplace, gas logs, gas stove, etc.)
  3. Stocking, decor and garland should maintain safe distances as described in your fireplace’s operation manual. If in doubt, 36” above the fireplace opening is recommended.

After Christmas

Make sure you dispose of your tree properly after Christmas is over. Dried-out trees are a fire danger and should never be left in the home or garage, or placed against your home.
