Endless Hot Water, Less $$$
Heating water is one of the largest energy expenses faced by today’s homeowner. Some reports estimate that 30% of a home’s energy use comes from a water heater tank. But there is a better way! A propane-fueled tankless water heater can provide you with an endless supply of hot water and lower energy bills.
What is a tankless water heater?
A tankless water heater is a highly energy efficient and compact water heater that heats water only when needed. Tankless water heaters produce an endless supply of hot water. In many cases, they can supply enough hot water for you to shower, wash clothes and use your dishwasher simultaneously.
Why go tankless?
Increased Energy Efficiency and a compact space saving design are the most popular reasons our customers install tankless water heaters. Customers that switch from an electric tank-style water heater to a propane-fueled tankless model report $40 to $90 reductions in their electric bills. Tankless water heaters are roughly the size of a carry-on suitcase. This space-saving design makes it possible for installations in tight locations that previously could not have housed a tank water heater. Tankless water heaters last longer than tank models. They also typically carry a warranty that is twice as long a conventional tank model.
How do they work?
Sensors installed in tankless water heaters can tell when the hot water is turned on in your home or business. When this happens the unit ignites itself and begins to heat the water as it flows through the tankless water heater’s heat exchanger. The water flowing out of the water heater will be heated to the temperature you desire. This happens in a matter of seconds. The HOT water flows through your home or business to the plumbing fixture you are using. Once you turn off the hot water the tankless water heater will shut off until the faucet is opened again. This means when you are not home during the day or asleep at night, you are not wasting energy by keeping a large storage tank of water hot 24/7!
One general misconception about tankless water heaters is that the water will be hot at your faucet as soon as you turn it on. While possible with additional plumbing equipment, it is not an accurate description of how a tankless water heater works. For example, if your water heater, tankless or conventional tank, is located 20 feet away from your kitchen sink, the hot water must travel through 20 feet of water pipe to get to you. This means that if the hot water in the water line has cooled during the day, the cool water must drain out of the water line before the hot water flowing from the water heater can reach the faucet.
What do they cost?
The initial cost of a tankless water heater installation is normally higher than that of a conventional water heater. However, since tankless water heaters are up to 98% efficient and last twice as long as conventional methods, their overall cost of ownership is considerably less. G&B Energy and Appalachian Energy offer an in-house instant rebate on tankless water heaters to help out with this upfront cost.
