Are you building or remodeling? Do you desire a wood burning fireplace but the expense of a masonry fireplace makes your head and wallet hurt? Then a prefabricated wood burning fireplace is for you. The cost of building a masonry chimney can easily blow the budget on a project. These days, prefabricated wood burning fireplaces come in many shapes, sizes, and efficiencies. They install quickly and can be finished to look like a masonry fireplace.

Selecting a Wood Burning Fireplace

When selecting a prefabricated wood burning fireplace for your project, keep in mind your goals for the fireplace. Would you like it to be an efficient heat source for your home? Would you rather have the occasional fire with minimal heat output? Do you want the ability to install gas logs or a gas insert in the fireplace one day?

New homes that have recently been constructed are significantly more efficient or “tighter” that homes built 10 to 20 years earlier. Since these homes have less air leaks, it can be difficult to get the fireplace to draw smoke up the chimney. To overcome this problem, fireplace manufacturers have developed an optional outside air kit. This kit is simply a small four to six-inch duct. It is piped from the fireplace to the exterior of the home. This allows the fireplace to pull combustion air from outside the structure. This greatly increases the likely hood that the chimney system will draw properly.

While outside air kits do not guarantee a chimney with an excellent draw, we STRONGLY ENCOURAGE the installation of an outside air kit with any wood-burning fireplace. EPA certified and high-efficiency units require the use of an outside air kit.
